Effluent Treatment Plant – ETP
Effluent Treatment Plant – Technology and Leadership in Service of Sustainability
One of the milestones of Petrom’s environmental commitment is its Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), which includes the company among the pioneers in Brazil in achieving Zero Liquid Discharge status, with 100% water reuse in its processes.
As early as the 1970s, when environmental issues were not yet widely discussed, Oxypar was already operating a treatment system for domestic and industrial effluents. With the creation of Petrom and technology advancements , this commitment was strengthened with the construction of a new ETP in 2008 — now a national benchmark and a model recognized by CETESB – São Paulo State Environmental Agency.
The facility continuously treats industrial effluents (originating from plasticizer production) and sanitary wastewater through physical-chemical, biological, and ultrafiltration processes, ensuring the quality of the treated water and enabling its full reuse for garden irrigation, floor washing, and cooling tower make-up water.
In addition to eliminating discharge into water bodies, the system allows Petrom to reduce potable water consumption by up to 22%, contributing to the preservation of this essential resource.
Water quality is ensured through continuous monitoring, including flow control and daily laboratory analyses.
